Internal Medicine Residency | Baptist North Mississippi
On Wednesday afternoon, January 27th, I read an email from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) that contained the following words: Initial Accreditation.
I know many others share my excitement in announcing the news that the newest Internal Medicine Residency to achieve ACGME accreditation is in Oxford, MS; and that we will participate in this year’s National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) Main Residency Match for 12 PGY1 positions to start on July 1, 2021. This program is years in the making, and I feel it is important to acknowledge the many people and institutions whose support was critical to achieving this milestone.
First, our faculty worked tirelessly to bring their diverse perspectives and clinical backgrounds to life by designing an innovative, forward-thinking, and balanced curriculum. They truly exemplify the mission of our program.
Our administrative teams in our local GME department, sponsoring institution (Baptist Memorial Medical Education), local hospital, and throughout the Baptist system leveraged their operational expertise and committed the financial resources to develop the infrastructure that is critical to our program’s success.
Our medical staff and clinical teams have a commitment to leading the cultural pivot to an academic community hospital.
The medical education community in Mississippi – University of Mississippi School of Medicine, William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine, and other regional Graduate Medical Education programs – have supported our efforts with an array of resources.
Our grant partners, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and Office of Mississippi Physician Workforce (OMPW), are providing critical seed capital so we can start training with first-class facilities and equipment.
And, of course, the Oxford community stands ready to embrace new learners into a community already rich in education, culture, and entertainment.
Lastly, hundreds of medical students from all over the world have shown their interest in training in our innovative program.
As for me, I’m grateful to have tremendous mentors to guide me along this path. I’m proud of the work we’ve accomplished so far; but I know the real reward comes when we see the inevitable successes and accomplishments of our trainees for years to come.
We’re building something great, and if you’re interested in being part of it – as a medical student, resident, or faculty member – I would love to learn more about you and how we can work together to improve the health of North Mississippi and beyond.
