An exciting few weeks of firsts

Dr. Sumner Abraham, Core Faculty Member; Dr. Seger Morris, Program Director, and Dr. Samuel Harris, Core Faculty Member conduct the first round of residency position interviews on Friday, Oct. 30.

With any new endeavor, the “firsts” come quickly and regularly, and that is certainly the case for the Internal Medicine residency program pending accreditation here in Oxford, Mississippi. After launching our new website and social media presence the week of October 19th, last week brought the excitement of hosting both our first Town Hall informational session and our first round of interviews at Baptist Memorial Hospital – North Mississippi.

On Thursday, October 29, we held our first in a series of Town Hall events to allow potential residents to learn more about the program we are building and to see the hospital and residency learning spaces. We hope that those in attendance were able to feel (even virtually) the enthusiasm that surrounds our program as we work toward the goal of welcoming the inaugural class of residents in 2021.

The next day – Friday, October 30 – we dove right into our first round of interviews. We have enjoyed getting to know these future physicians and learning about their diverse backgrounds, interesting stories that led them to pursue careers in medicine, and what drives and motivates them. All of them had impressive credentials and made the interviews very enjoyable.

While it’s true that our application and interview season may look different than many established programs, there are also plenty of similarities. We are still able to provide a glimpse into the daily life of our future residents just like any other organization – just with the disclaimer that we are still awaiting accreditation from the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in January 2021. We are happy to share didactic schedules, rotation plans, facility highlights, details about living and working in Oxford, and the overall benefits of joining a well-established system like Baptist Memorial Health Care Corporation.

One great question from our first events – How will an Intern’s experience at a newly established program differ from one where they would interact with upper-level residents ahead of them? We’ll give a more in-depth answer to this question in an upcoming blog, but bottom line – we’re confident that their learning experience will in no way be lacking. Our faculty holds decades of experience and is very well-prepared to ensure that residents excel in their training and future careers through individualized attention and guidance.

We’d love you to join us for our next Town Hall on Thursday, November 19, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. CST. Sign up for this or one of our future sessions today!
