Meet our Associate Program Director: Jacob Whelan, MD

In his role as Assistant Medical Director of the Hospitalist Group at Baptist Memorial Hospital -North Mississippi for the last five years, Dr. Jacob Whelan has mentored and trained dozens of new physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants while leading educational programs in the practice of hospital medicine to orient and acquaint them with the local culture and organization. To enhance his administrative, educational, and leadership skills in this role, he attends the annual leadership development conference hosted by Schumacher Clinical Partners while tirelessly enhancing his skills through self-directed professional improvement resources.
As a life-long learner and passionate teacher, he became a Certified Epic Builder in January 2019, enhancing his role as Physician Informaticist for Baptist North Mississippi. This certification also provides Dr. Whelan a strong background to assist the Internal Medicine Residency program in providing the clinical documentation and data management framework to support quality improvement initiatives while maximizing EHR efficiency for the entire academic team.
As a testament of Dr. Whelan’s clinical, teaching, and leadership skills, he was recognized as the consummate physician at Baptist North Mississippi and awarded Physician of the Year for the organization in 2019.
In addition to his roles in clinical supervision, delivering didactic lectures, and otherwise training and evaluating residents, Dr. Whelan will lead the development of inpatient curriculum and the integration of academic internal medicine teams with the current hospitalist group. He also serves as Chair of the Clinical Competency Committee, and is a member of the Program Evaluation Committee and the Clinical Learning Environment Review Committee.
Dr. Whelan was raised in Greenwood, MS, and is a life-long Ole Miss fan. He attended Ole Miss for undergraduate and medical school, and completed residency at the Medical University of South Carolina. He has been married for 9 years to a wonderful wife, and they have been blessed with 5 beautiful children.
